Mount Clear is an outlying semi-rural suburb of Ballarat, 5.7 km south-east of the Ballarat post office. It is believed that it was named because of its relatively elevated location being cleared of timber during or soon after the gold rush. It is surrounded by undulating hills and flanked by bush and pine plantation forestry. The suburb has several educational institutions catering for all age levels, including two secondary schools, Mount Clear College & Damascus College, two primary schools, Mount Clear Primary School & Emmaus Catholic Primary School, and a community kindergarten. There is a hall, a church, and a sports ground, along with the Midvale shopping centre which provides a range of goods and services to surrounding homes, which often have spectacular elevated views. There are plenty of walking tracks and parkland reserve areas to explore. Housing consists almost solely of single-family detached homes on a mix or large and midsize blocks. There is a small commercial area on the corners of Geelong and Sebastopol Road.
