Originally known as 'Bowdun', Black Hill is popular suburb of Ballarat, northeast of the city. Black Hill has several large parks, a public swimming pool, a hotel, a post office, and a renowned primary school. Public transport is available to Black Hill, yet only a short walk (approx. 1.7kms) will take you to the CBD and the Ballarat train station. The Black Hill Reserve includes the Black Hill lookout, offering sweeping views of Ballarat and the surrounding district to the south. The reserve has also become a focal point of downhill mountain bike riding with six cross country trails, four downhill trails, two pump tracks, skills area and advanced jump park are open for use. Howitt Street sits on the edge of Black Hill, which provides a direct route through to Wendouree Shopping strip along with Ballarat Grammar (a private co-educational school). Black Hill also provides an easy route to the Western Freeway for Melbourne commuters.
